Following the July, 1863 Battle of Gettysburg both the Union and Confederate Armies eventually returned to Virginia and encamped for the winter. By May, 1864 General Ulysses S. Grant had become commander of all Union armies and personally accompanied the Army of the Potomac on its mission to destroy General Lee’s army and end the war.
Your tour will begin at Saunders Field where elements of the two armies collided and pounded each other for two days with neither side gaining a decisive advantage.
At your second tour stop, the Widow Tapp Field, you will follow the footsteps of Union and Confederate soldiers into some of the most forbidding terrain imaginable.
Your final stop will bring you to the road junction often referred to as the “most important intersection of the Civil War” where you’ll learn about one of General Grant’s most momentous decisions.
