One of several “On to Richmond” drives resulted in the Battle of Fredericksburg in December, 1862 with Union General Ambrose E. Burnside's attempt to capture the Confederate capital. Your tour will begin at Chatham Manor, a colonial-era mansion which served as a Union headquarters and hospital before, during and after the Battle of Fredericksburg.
Your guide will point out unique aspects of the battle as you travel the city streets to Prospect Hill, the tour’s second stop. Here you will learn about Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s repulse of a short-lived Union breakthrough.
Following the well-preserved Confederate trench line, your tour will conclude at the Sunken Road/Marye’s Heights battle site where your guide will bring to life the Army of the Potomac’s doomed assaults against the Confederates behind the infamous stone wall.
