The arrival of spring in 1863 brought about another Union attempt to destroy General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Your first stop, at the site of the Chancellorsville homestead, will allow for interpretation of Union General Joseph “Fighting Joe” Hooker’s daring plan to defeat his worthy opponent. Next, you will visit the site of the “cracker box conference” where Generals Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson devised their own daring plan in response to General Hooker.
After visiting the spot from which Jackson launched his audacious flank attack you will be able to stand near the site of his catastrophic wounding by “friendly fire”. The Hazel Grove and Fairview artillery positions form the backdrop for the guide’s interpretation of the climactic May 3 fighting.
